In 2002 the Parish of St Stephen celebrated its 50th anniversary. To mark the occasion a Mass was held, together with a Parish Social on 10th July. An open invitation to join the celebration was extended to everyone, past and present, including priests who had served in the Parish over that period. Fr Daniel Cadogen, the oldest surviving Parish Priest accepted the invitation to be Principal Celebrant at the Mass.
During the year we fundraised:
For the reordering of the Lady Chapel and it’s dedication to Our Lady, Star of the Sea;
The purchase of a plague listing all the priests who had served in the Parish over the first 50 years;
A Book of Remembrance to pray for all past Parishioner’s and friends;
A simple remembrance cross in memory of Fr John O’Kelly, the last serving Vincentian priest;
The external lighting of the Church to promote it’s visibility in the community;
And the process of reordering of the Parish Club was begun.
Win Shelmerdine also wrote a detailed history of the Parish, inviting Parishioners to send her their photographs and share their memories.
